FSSAI Guidelines for Packing of Milk and Milk Products

Milk has been an important human nutrient source. It provides complete nutrition in a balanced proportion and is rich in fats, milk proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The safety of milk always remains a challenging task due to illegal use of preservatives and adulterants.

•        The heat-treated milk and milk products filling in container and bottling shall be carried out mechanically and their sealing should be carried out automatically;
•        It is prohibited to reuse the packaging of dairy products, provided where the containers can be used for thorough cleaning and disinfecting;
•        It is mandatory to carry out the sealing of the container in the establishment, in which the last heat- treatment of drinking milk or liquid milk products is carried out.
•        Immediately after filling, it must be properly sealed in order to avoid any adverse effect of external organisms on its characteristic. The sealing device should be competent in such a way so that once the container has opened, the evidence of opening remain clear and easy to check.
•        Immediately after packaging, the dairy product must be placed in a room allotted for packaging.
